What are the best shoes for the Threshold Trail Series?

Firstly, we have to stress that everyone is different. Not every shoe is suitable for every runner. So the question ‘What are the best shoes for the Threshold Trail Series? Is a tough one to answer!

We always strongly recommend that you have a running assessment before you buy shoes. At Profeet, we don’t just look at your biomechanics, we look at your feet!

This video shows you what happens during a Profeet running assessment and below we detail which shoes our team members used previously for the Dixons Carphone Race to the Stones.

Brooks Cascadia

Iain is an accomplished ultra-runner and has completed the CCC (Courmayeur-Champex-Chamonix), South Downs Way 50 and Race to the Stones over many years. He runs all his ultras in the Brooks Cascadia. The current model has been updated with a more durable upper and great traction on the sole for the terrain of the threshold event.

Mizuno Daichi

Wave Hayate was the shoe that Max ran in during the 2014 race it is a fast, lightweight shoe designed for runners prioritising speed. It suits Max perfectly – a highly proficient and experienced ultra-runner. Max finished 3rd at RTTS 2014 and won the Thames Path 100 in 2015. The shoe has been since discontinued.

Salomon Sense Ride

As part of the 2014 team, Chris preferred to run in the Salomon Fellraiser – a great trail shoe that’s great for muddy and wet conditions, with excellent traction and lightweight. The shoe has since been discontinued as the most similar footwear now is the Salomon Ultra Pro.

Saucony Peregrine

Pip ran in this model during the race as it was lightweight flexible but with amazing traction. The model still exists today and is a great option for race day and those who have used Saucony road running shoes.

Overall, in 2014 all our ambassadors used trail running shoes. In the last ¾ years however there has been an increase in people using their road shoes on the route. This we believe is down to the amazingly warm weather conditions which have been forecast year on year. However, in saying that, a trail shoe is very highly recommended due to the versatility of the shoe especially with the unreliable British weather!
