Coco Gauff, the fifteen-year-old taking Wimbledon by storm

wimbledon 2019

On Monday she comfortably defeated her idol Venus Williams and backed this up with a straight sets win over former semi-finalist Magdalena Rybarikova. Gauff is the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon in the Open Era, and including qualifiers now has five straight sets wins under her belt. She has now set up a third-round meeting with Slovenia’s Polona Hercog, where John McEnroe believes she is the favourite.

In an interview with the BBC, Tracy Austin, a two-time US Open Champion herself has said that Gauff’s talent as a tremendous athlete has been talked about for years, but now this impressive run at Wimbledon has started to gain her international recognition. At only thirteen she was the runner-up at the 2017 junior US Open and followed this up with winning the 2018 junior French Open.
From watching her over the last week you would think that she has been at the top for years. She is a tall, imposing player with great anticipation who chases down every point. Her highlight is her winning backhand which has, so far, had her opponents beaten.
Gauff has teamed up with young Brit Jay Clarke in the mixed doubles, in a draw that also contains the pairing of Serena Williams and Andy Murray. A good move for Clarke and it will be exciting to see how far the pairing can go.
