Break in Guidelines for wearing in new custom insoles and shoes

Our recommended breaking in process

  1. Start by gently walking around the house or work for 30 – 60 minutes in your new footwear and insoles. Do this two or three times before you go out for a walk, run or training session.
  2. Your first two or three walks/runs/training sessions should be shorter than usual and at a low/reduced intensity. If you usually run for an hour start with 30 minutes, etc.
  3. Then, gradually increase for a further two to three sessions.
  4. Cautiously resume your normal distance and speed once you are satisfied that the shoes and insoles are working for you and not causing any issues.
  5. If at any time you feel rubbing, pressure, numbing or pain, then slow down, rest or stop. Go back a step and If the problem persists please contact us to book a free follow up appointment. If you continue, there is a risk of blisters or injury (as with any footwear).
Key points

  • How long it takes to break-in a shoe/insole will depend on your individual feet, body and the intensity, time and duration that you use the shoes/insoles for.
  • As with all new footwear, it takes time for the materials to soften and break-in as well as for your feet, skin and even biomechanics to get used to new pressures and changes that a new pair of shoes and insoles brings. • Allow 50-100 kms for your feet to get used to any new footwear and custom insoles.
  • If in doubt go back a step or spend an extra day or session on each step.
  • Even the best fitting shoe and insole can cause rubbing, soreness, and blisters. This is due to the nature of our feet, footwear and the activities we do.
  • If preparing for a new activity or, significant challenge e.g. marathon, ultra-event, mountain climb, we recommend that you take extra time to prepare your feet properly. Please also see our foot preparation and blister guides at profeet.co.uk/blisters.
  • Profeet custom insoles are fundamentally designed to increase comfort and should not cause discomfort or pain. However, they may feel a little different to start with, as your feet and body adjust to the sensation and the increased comfort and support.
