Plantar Fasciitis

We often have runners come to our store that are experiencing foot and ankle pain. Plantar heel pain (plantar fasciitis) is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries affecting the feet that can have one or multiple causes, including plantar fasciitis. Here, we discover the best custom footwear solutions for those with plantar fasciitis.

Plantar Fasciitis – what is it?

Plantar fasciitis, a common affliction among runners, is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. Usually, pain or discomfort in the heel and arch of the foot is worse in the morning, or when walking or running after periods of sitting.

Symptoms can ease as the tissues warm up, but this condition can significantly hinder performance and enjoyment of the sport.
The plantar fascia plays a crucial role in supporting the arch of the foot and absorbing shock during activities such as running and walking. One key aspect of its function is the windlass mechanism, which involves the tightening of the plantar fascia as the big toe flexes (dorsiflexion), contributing to the arch’s stability during the gait cycle.

Causes of Plantar Fasciitis in runners

For runners, plantar fasciitis typically arises from increased stress on the plantar fascia. This stress can be due to various factors, such as:

Increased distances or intensity
Runners who suddenly increase their mileage or intensity without adequate preparation can place excessive strain on the plantar fascia.

Biomechanical issues
Reduced ankle range of motion, decreased flexibility in the big toe joint, and previous injuries can all contribute to an uneven distribution of stress across the foot, increasing the risk of plantar fasciitis.

There are studies that show a higher than average BMI can put undue strain on the feet, causing changes in the mechanics of the heel pad and the plantar fascia that results in heel pain. Also, prolonged periods on your feet, especially in stiff boots (hence its alternative name ‘Policeman’s Heel’) can increase the likelihood of plantar fasciitis.

I used to work with British Airways and a lot of ground crew suffered from plantar fasciitis. Marble, unforgiving floors, long periods of standing in inappropriate footwear,” says Paul, our long-standing team Podiatrist who has a Master’s in Clinical Biomechanics.

Reducing stress on the plantar fascia

Allowing time for the plantar fascia to heal by taking breaks from high-impact activities is crucial. By reducing running distances or intensity, or incorporating more rest days, can help alleviate stress on the plantar fascia. At Profeet, we provide comprehensive solutions for managing and preventing plantar heel pain, tailor-made to you:

Custom Insoles

Our expert team uses state-of-the-art technology to analyse your foot structure and biomechanics. We then create custom insoles that provide optimal support and cushioning tailored to your unique arch profile. These insoles help distribute pressure evenly, reducing the strain on the plantar fascia and promoting healing.

With a custom insole, if your ankle range of motion is poor, we want to kind of increase that ankle range of motion. If your big toe can’t bend properly, we either want to encourage it to bend or we want to help you get over that toe that can’t bend,” explains Paul.

Appropriate footwear

Choosing the right running shoes is crucial for preventing and managing plantar fasciitis. Our staff can recommend shoes that provide the necessary support and cushioning, helping to mitigate the risk of injury. We take into account your running style, foot shape, and any specific issues you may have.

Strength and conditioning advice

In addition to providing footwear and insoles, Profeet offers advice on strength and conditioning exercises. Our team can guide you through exercises designed to enhance flexibility, improve muscle strength, and support the structures of your feet and lower legs. These exercises can help you build resilience and reduce the likelihood of re-injury.

Additionally, we can give advice on taping to support the arch for reducing strain on the plantar fascia during activities.

We’ve even got little spiky balls and things like that to help strengthen the foot,” adds Paul.
