Profeet Ambassador, Iain Martin, recently returned from the European Age Group Duathlon Championships in Banyoles, Spain with a bronze medal.
Competing in the Male 60-64 age category in the Standard distance (10km run/40km bike/5km run), Iain was delighted:
“This was right at the top of my expectations, although I knew a good placing was possible.”
“Last month I finished 13th in the equivalent triathlon event in Tarragona, but because swimming is my weakest discipline, and running my strongest, I was feeling positive.
On top of that I broke my shoulder blade in December, so I was only able to start swimming in April, plus my chain came off on the bike (my fault and could have been easily avoided if I’d ridden the course before racing!).
I finished the swim in 34th (of 41 in my age group), but even allowing for the SNAFU, I was up to 20th by the end of the bike. I felt strong on the run, despite the heat, and ended up beating a Norwegian in a sprint to the line for 13th. It turned out my run split was the 4th best of the day, so I thought a good ranking in Duathlon could be possible.”
“Racing in Banyoles four weeks later, it was 29C when our wave started and 33C (‘feels like’ 35C) by the time I finished.
“I generally didn’t feel too bad – maybe I’d accidentally done some acclimatisation during our own heatwaves!
“I ran my first 10km slightly slower than I’d hoped, but I still came into T1 just under 42 minutes. I’d been looking at bib numbers to try and work out if any were from my age category and was pretty sure I was 5th or 6th, which was encouraging.”
“The bike went well. The course was hot, but not too hilly, which suits me. I thought I’d probably overtaken one guy from my age group, but when I came into T2 to see only two bikes on the racks, so knew I was up to 3rd.
“As it goes, an Irish guy finished right behind me on the bike, and overtook me in transition to lead me out, just behind him now in 4th. I knew I’d done a faster 10k split than him, so I figured I was probably a stronger runner and overtook him as we joined the run course from transition about 300m in.
“He was getting a lot of support from the vocal Irish contingent, but at each turn I could see he was still about 20 seconds behind me. That closed slightly by the final turn, but I gave it one last effort and crossed the finish line 18 seconds ahead.”
The results weren’t immediately available at the finish, but after much refreshing of the website, it was there in black and white – a bronze medal!”
“I’d like to thank Profeet for all your support. I run 2000-3000km a year injury free (apart from when I break my shoulder skiing!) and I put that down to the fit of your custom insoles.”

Running in extreme heat places even greater challenges on the body and the need to manage hydration and fueling is paramount.
