Iain is a veteran in the duathlon, triathlon and ultrarunning world. Not only is he an elite and consistent runner but he has an impressive endurance mindset.
Next year he will move up to the MV60 category, and he’s still looking incredibly good and running extremely well – and long may it continue. Here’s Iain’s race report:
In June I raced at the World Duathlon Championship in Pontevedra, Spain, representing Team GB in the MV55 age category.
I finished 19th in my age group, which I was very happy with. I was racing in the Standard distance, which means a 10km run, followed by a 40km cycle and then a 5km run. Part of the skill of any multisport event is pacing, but even more so in duathlon – go too fast on the first run and you’ll hit the ‘red zone’ on the bike, leaving you with nothing left for the final run.
My training has been triathlon focussed this year to date so based on where I felt I was, my plan was to run a 41-minute first run, push hard on the bike, then try and hit a 21-minute final run.
It all came together perfectly
I hit those marks to record my first top 20 at a World Champs to add to my top 20 at the Europeans in 2024. I was particularly pleased with the result as this is my last year before I move up to the MV60 age group.
It isn’t all down hill
The fact is that once you get past 50, it’s not quite all downhill, but the difference between the youngest and oldest in the five-year age categories becomes more important than in your thirties or forties.
To put that in context, six of the top ten in the MV55 were all in the youngest year possible. And encouragingly, my time would have placed me 5th in the MV60 results.
Looking forward to the next phase
That leaves me in the unusual position of looking forward to getting older! In 2026, I hope to compete at the European Champs in both triathlon and duathlon and cash in on my relative youth.
What’s next?
For now, I’m transitioning to ultra running, as I’m taking part in the 57km OCC trail race in Chamonix in August.
I’d like to thank Profeet for all the support they have given me over the years, helping me stay free of injury, despite a heavy training load… on an ageing body!
And we’d like to thank Iain for continuing to represent Profeet as part of our ambassador team. He’s a great advocate for longevity and the fact that with Profeet custom fitted footwear you can quite literally keep running for longer.
