Look who dropped in to see us... Sara Davies! -
Sara Davies - Dragon's Den - Running shoes

You’ll recognise Sara from Dragon’s Den, where as a business owner who has built a very successful crafting empire, she shares her knowledge with other budding entrepreneurs.

Sara is an inspiration for many people up and down the country with her creativity, enterprising spirit and warm personality. Sara only took up running in the last few years and now she’s hooked. Last year she channelled her energy and her training into participating in the Great North Run. This year she is taking part again.

In advance of the race, it was a real pleasure to welcome Sara back to the Profeet Lab to look at some issues she had been experiencing when running.

“It has made such a difference to me since last year… so I went back again!”

“I went to get fitted for some new running shoes – now I know that seems really excessive but with all the hassle and pain I had with the plantar fasciitis earlier this year and the Great North Run coming up in a few weeks I wasn’t taking any chances!

Running shoe analysis

We put her on our new RunRight 3D running shoe analysis system to identify the most appropriate running shoe for her gait style. And of course we ran her through our biomechanical analysis and foot scanning processes to evaluate the causes of her discomfort.

Plantar Fasciitis analysis and treatment

Plantar Fasciitis

Previously we addressed shin splints (pain in the front of the shins caused by friction and impact) and calf tightness. This time we were looking at causes for Plantar Fasciitis: pain under the instep and heel caused by collapsing arches and a very common issue for runners and non-runners.

The solution was new Profeet Custom Insoles to support the arches of the feet and some innovative True Motion running shoes.

True Motion Running Shoes

Engineered in Germany, True Motion running shoes are built on research, experience and state-of-the art technology. They combine craftsmanship and new thinking to create footwear that is both functional and innovative. The U-TechTM Nevos technology cleverly ‘decouples’ the heel and fore foot cushioning, to improve centring and encourage a more natural transition through the foot. The MotionBridge feature is inspired by the plantar structures of the foot to enable optimal energy transfer between the rear foot and fore foot.

Running on Air

With her new custom insoles and running shoes, Sara is all set to run again with the arches of her feet now supported correctly. The new footwear should help Sara to avoid/recover from Plantar Fasciitis* when training.

Important Tip
However, we cautioned her not to wear brand new footwear just before a big race. Better to wear worn-in shoes for this one and then break in the new shoes over the coming weeks. This is a very important point for all runners. New shoes do need to be broken in or can lead to blisters or discomfort as the new shoes will not have softened up or started to adopt the form of your feet and running style.

An investment in comfort and performance

Profeet custom fitted footwear combines an assessment by a qualified biomechanist, the selection of the right footwear for your foot shape, running gait and needs, fine tuned with our signature Custom Insoles. Made whilst you wait, custom insoles are customised for each foot to provide the correct amount of support, cushioning, propulsion, guidance and foot hold. They create a bespoke interface between your feet and the running shoe. Each pair can last for many years (depending on frequency of use). They can also be transferred between shoes so you can use them in your shoe rotation – between weekend training, long run or race shoes.

*Please note that if you have significant Plantar Fasciitis that has been troubling you for some time, the first stage is to actually allow some healing time. No running, if in pain see your GP, and be sure to wear comfortable and supportive footwear such as OOFOS first thing in the morning and when at home.
