Eliud Kipchoge is going to try and break the barrier at an attempt in the UK in the Autumn. With the backing and sponsorship from the chemical firm Ineos, he believes the time is now.
His last attempt was with Nike as part of the Breaking 2 project. The project entailed customising and timing every single element of the run itself. This included his kit, the pacers running with him in formation as well as the track at Monza being an ideal location. It saw him come close to the record, he ran 2:00:25. He is aiming to take off those 25 seconds and be the first human ever to run 1:59:59 for the marathon.
There is no information out yet as to whether he will be doing it in race conditions or whether it will be similarly staged like the Breaking 2 project.
Hopefully all will be revealed soon…can he break 2 hours?
