Iain Martin takes on the Devil's Lite 50k - ultra running race report
Iain Martin Devil's lite 50km ultramarathon

The Devil’s Lite 50K is a free ultra-marathon, passing through the stunning South Downs National Park, taking in picturesque villages and stunning wildlife.

With an ascent gain of 1530m it’s a great training route for those aiming for longer events like Profeet Ambassador Iain Martin, who is working towards the epic Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc later this year. Iain has planned a series of progressively more challenging distances in his run up to the 170km UTMB starting with the Goodwood Marathon back in April (where he pulled out a solid PB of 3:06) and the upcoming Pilgrim’s Challenge, to build endurance and form.

Iain reported,

The Devil’s Lite is a 50k out and back race from Steyning, up onto the South Downs Way, along to Clayton and back with 1500m of climbing along the way.

I’ve got to the point now in my training where I can think of 50km as a long training run, so I used this as an opportunity to test kit and fuelling, but at a slightly faster pace than usual.”

He continued,

It was my first time racing in On Cloudventure trail shoes and using a new Inov8 race pack. Both worked out well, with no blisters or chafing and I enjoyed using the soft-flask system for the first time instead of a bladder.

Considering I didn’t taper, running 40km (and playing a cricket match!) in the week of the race, I was very happy with my placing (15th out of 190 starters).

One of the slightly irritating elements of racing in the ‘new normal’ is that you never know where you are in the field as everyone sets off at different times, but that aside, it was a joy to be out on the trails and competing again.

Huge kudos to organisers XNRG for not only putting on this event, but putting it on for free as a gesture of goodwill to all runners who’ve had races cancelled in the last year or more.”

What’s next on the training plan?

In two weeks’ time I have the Pilgrim Challenge – another out and back, but this time twice the distance over two days on the North Downs Way. That will be a sterner test, but another step in the right direction to the UTMB.”

Placing 15th overall and 4th in the Men’s 50-59 category, is a great result!  Thanks for the update Iain, we’ll look forward to hearing about the Pilgrim Challenge in mid June.
