Pierre Meslet – ultrarunner, UTMB conqueror and MDS top ten finisher (2021), is the very man to put these top end shoes to the test. Fast on his feet, he demands endurance, comfort, power and rebound, so what was his verdict?

Fast shoes showed up at the track today in #barnelms alongside a big family of hungry geese.
The idea was to test (very un-scientifically) and compare (subjectively obviously) 2 new shoes by Saucony, versus 2 shoes I know well and have been using for several months, the Hoka Carbon X (663km) and the Nike Alphafly Next% (288km) .
The Endorphin Speed 3 is extremely light and that was a great surprise.”
Set up
4 x 400m at similar Rate of Perceived Effort (45″ jog) with each pair of shoes.
Running order
Started with the new Saucony Tempus (1), then Hoka Carbon X (2), Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 (3) and finished with Nike Alphafly Next% (4)
Saucony Tempus
- Saucony Tempus
Felt comfy with a snug toe box. Very cushioned and elastic.
- Hoka Carbon X
More rigid but with a noticeable forward propulsion. Little bounce and didn’t feel very cushioned at all in comparison to (1).
- Saucony Endorphin Speed 3
Very springy with a lovely upward “air time“ noticeable straight away. However, it lacked the forward propulsion I liked in the Carbon X. The Endorphin Speed 3 is extremely light and that was a great surprise.
- Nike Alphafly Next%
(4) Felt much heavier (mostly at the forefoot) to start with but got used to it after the first 400m. The upward gain is amazing but once again the forward propulsion could be better.

Custom Insoles are a must
In each shoe I was using my customised insoles by @profeetcustom I use them all the time, for comfort, stability and performance. I like them so much I even wear them at work!
