Shoe Review: Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 -
BROOKS ADRENALINE GTS 23

This month we review the ever-popular Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 – one of our best selling models.

Keeping your natural movements in a safe range

The Adrenaline GTS has been a staple of Brooks for over two decades and underwent some major changes over the last few years but has settled into their new GuideRail® design. The original ‘GTS’ meaning has adapted over the years and now means Go-To-Support which is now displayed in all the supportive models using their GuideRail support system with the aim to keep your natural movements in a safe range and almost working like bumpers on a bowling alley to keep everything traveling in a forward direction rather than firmer postings of the past.

BROOKS ADRENALINE GTS 23
  1. Smart support – GuideRails® technology adds support by keeping excess movement in check.
  2. Updated cushioning – New midsole features soft and lighter weight DNA LOFT v2 cushioning.
  3. Enhanced upper – Engineered air mesh upper provides comfort and breathability.

Fit & Feel

The fit of the Adrenaline 23 has remained effectively unchanged from its predecessors in terms of midfoot and forefoot accommodation but one of the changes made is to the heel counter construction. The update uses extra memory foam around the heel in order to improve out of the box comfort but in doing so it also helps to aid heel retention, this does start to pack down with use as with any shoe and may mean you need to adapt the lacing over time but you don’t lose that close gripped feeling.

Another change they have made is to the midsole where they have updated the DNA Loft to DNA Loft v2, although this is a small update in material it does give the shoe a very slightly softer feeling in the longer runs but hasn’t noticeably changed the support of the shoe which is useful.

The Adrenaline GTS 23 also is one of the Brooks shoes that has width option with the wider 2E and 4E option available for men at Profeet along with a narrow 2A and wider D width for women available.

Stability and structure

This marks the fourth generation of the shoe to use the new GuideRail technology. The structure works with a firmer medial aspect which is longer and starts slightly further forward to help stabilise and guide the midfoot through the stance phase and to try and control pronation.

The lateral aspect starts slightly further back which is aimed more towards heel strikes to stabilise the initial contact… that being said it will help the overall hold of the rearfoot for those with a midfoot or forefoot strike by slightly decreasing decoupling of the rear and forefoot.

The shoe still utilises a 12mm drop which hasn’t changed for a long time now and sits at the higher end of drops within similar models, we have found this therefore becomes especially useful for those with a history of calf or Achillies issues who require that slightly higher heel but either our Lite Fit analysis or Signature Sport fit will be able to establish if you would benefit from a higher drop shoe.

Performance

The Adrenaline GTS 23 sits as a strong all rounder but is edged towards the longer more relaxed runs as it sits within Brooks’s Cushioned range; this orientates the show towards a softer landing and a plusher feel. Not as plush and soft as alternatives such as the Glycerin GTS, but more so than models in the Energize or Speed range.

The updated DNA Loft V2 is both lighter and more responsive than its predecessor so if you want to push the shoe around tempo sessions or a speedy 5k the shoe will be able to work with you during these runs as well.

A positive step forward for this much-loved favourite

Overall Brooks’s decision to leave the shoe relatively unchanged is a positive as many brands have been making big changes to long-running shoes, but sticking to a working formula has always served Brooks well. At Profeet the Adrenaline GTS has always been one of our best selling models and this update continues this trend nicely as it combines both the comfort and performance successfully.

Shoes from other brands that during our gait analysis would work similarly would be the Mizuno Wave Inspire 19, the Saucony Guide 16 or the ASICS GT 2000 11.
